I don’t expect to get any responses from this one, it’s not going to be popular. But that’s okay.
I sat down to study my Bible this morning and turned to 1 Peter because I hadn’t read in that Book for a while. Chapter 1 jumped out at me, probably because I had it highlighted, but I took the time to read it and write it down so it would stick with me. As I was reading it, I thought about all of the people that I know who live for the pleasures of today. I see it all the time on Facebook, someone’s having a party or going on vacation. Please don’t get me wrong, we ALL need to take time for fun, otherwise our lives become so imbalanced that we are miserable. I guess what struck a chord in me is how social media encourages people to post only their most fun times in pictures. If you look closely, the really inspiring stories are told through news outlets or organized groups, such as churches or philanthropic organizations.
Yes, there’s lots of debate and PLENTY of complaining on social media. But I’m referring to the personal pictures the people put up, the selfies, the pet pictures, the parties, dinners and outings. Those pictures that depict a life of living for now.
1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
So many people live like they don’t believe there is a living hope and that salvation is really there. A lot of people even deny the existence of God because of all the terrible things that happen in our physical world. Even Christians ask God, “Why?” My question is, Why are we so arrogant that we think we deserve an explanation for anything that happens in our lives? If we profess to believe, we should simply give God our love, honor and most definitely thanksgiving for the provision of life and provision of salvation through Jesus Christ’s humiliating sacrifice.
Shouldn’t we be putting on Facebook our vocalized prayers for others? Shouldn’t we be posting pictures of the incredible beauty of God’s creation in praise to Him? Shouldn’t all of our days be focused on living for Him and loving Him through our words and our actions? I believe that if we shifted our focus to these types of things rather than posting our carefree moments of life all the time, we might be able to bring others closer to God in the faith simply through our encouragement and enthusiasm for God’s will, rather than our own.
Please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I’m not saying that posting family and get-togethers should be eliminated. I’m only saying that those type of posts should be secondary and our focus in ALL aspects of life should be on our Creator. It’s the best way of showing God our love, when everything we do revolves around Him.
